Guessing the word correctly after a letter appeared in a bonus square also won money according to the colored square. The sprint round was played with two winners of the Crossword round, and consisted of four words. On each word, host Edwards told the contestant how many letters are in the word, then read the clue.
When he said "GO", a clock started, and the contestant was shown two letters at a time. On each pair of letters, the player selected one to place into the word.
Once a letter was chosen, the other one would go back into a random shuffle. There were no Stoppers at all in this round: every letter is correct. A correct answer moved on to the next word, but an incorrect answer caused a ten-second penalty and stayed with that word.
Play continued until all but one letter was placed; the contestant can allow five seconds to run safely without penalty by not guessing. The round ended when the player guessed all the words right. There are three games each show, so the teams have a chance to pick up up to three prizes and six tiles.
Scrabble Speedword. This round pays homage to the classic Scrabble from the s on NBC. The differences are that instead of putting letters on the board, the words involved are scrambled and they're worth the standard Scrabble value of the letters used with the values doubled or tripled if any of the words touch any of the two colored squares red and orange , no blue or green.
Also, each new word uses a letter from any previously played word, not just the immediate previously played word. Before the round, teams were spotted points according to the bonus tiles earned. Because upon selection, the point values of the tiles involved will determine a head start for the team. There were two ways of doing so: Sixteen "tiles" appear on the board and they flash at random, the number of tiles that flashed were based on how many bonus tiles a team has earned during the show; the teams hit a button to see what tiles they get.

Don't like one or more of the letters on your Scrabble tray? You'll then be asked how many letters you want to change out; one letter, two letters, or up to all seven letters.

In addition, after a contestant called one of the two displayed letters, the other one disappeared and two new letters were presented as long as there were at least three blanks left in the word. The contestant was shown only one letter when there were two blanks.
This change remained in place for the remainder of the series run, and a fourth word was later added to the Sprint.
In addition to the contestants now using the same set of words, the Sprint payoff rules changed. This tournament was conducted with a different format from usual Scrabble matches, and these changes were eventually made permanent. A total of contestants were selected via a nationwide search, with four competing on each episode in preliminary matches from Monday through Thursday over the first 12 weeks.
Because only four episodes aired during the week of November 24—28 no episode aired that Thursday, due to the Thanksgiving holiday , a wild card contestant was chosen to advance to that Friday's quarterfinals alongside the three preliminary match winners. During the final week, starting on December 22, the 12 quarterfinal winners and four wild card contestants competed in semifinal matches on Monday through Thursday.
With slight adjusting, this tournament format became the new permanent Scrabble format on December 29, With this format change, Scrabble became a self-contained minute program; before, play continued until time was called and episodes could straddle. With the adoption of the new format came a new final round. Called the Bonus Sprint, this round enabled the champion to win a cash jackpot. The champion faced two final words, the first with at least six letters and the second with at least seven.
All of the Sprint rules were in effect, meaning that any incorrect answer resulted in an automatic loss as the penalty wiped out the remaining seconds. No cash bonuses were given directly to contestants in this version; all bonuses went into the Bonus Sprint jackpot.
