Detention game




















Something really noteworthy about the plot is the fact that the story is told through the eyes of a child which is really saddening as we see the decisions made begin rooting themselves at home, watching what those decisions have created. Experienced on a 2D perspective, Detention 's experience relies on solving relatively simple puzzles and navigating the school and the various nightmarish worlds, trying our best to avoid the ghosts, known as Lingereds, that patrol the various locations.

There is no combat, forcing players to avoid or maneuver around certain enemies while holding their breath. When the player prompts the character to hold their breath, they are undetectable in this state, but just like in real life, players cannot hold their breath for long; because of this, players must time their breathing accordingly.

Other times, holding your breath doesn't work and players must find and place a food offering for the Lingered to eat, distracting them from the player. Players are given a variety of interactable objects and notes that gives more depth and information to the world. With this, players are also given interactable objects that are often used at later points in the game, much like other survival horror games.

The gameplay is quite simple, but this is a strong point for the game so players can focus on its story and atmosphere. The main draw for Detention is its themes and scares. Where most games recycle the same scares over and over again, Detention always brings something new, building tension and terror with some really unsettling imagery, terrifying enemy designs, and really powerful sound design.

The sound of Detention is as uncomfortable and alarming as its graphical design. The audio design revolves around shrill screams and ominous, indescribable tones that play in the background as players navigate the disturbing world. When there is music, however, the player is filled with a sense of dread, confusion, terror and, oddly enough, wonder. Honestly, when it comes to setting the atmosphere, Detention is a master at this craft, producing work that can rival the likes of Silent Hill.

This is my final project for Game Design. Three students decide to investigate an abandoned school. When discovered by a ghost who haunts the school, the player is caught and sent to detention.

The player must then explore rooms and solve puzzles to collect items that will help them escape. The player can go to other rooms by opening and clicking on locations on the map. Includes a cake minigame where the player must put together ingredients to bake certain kinds of cake, a mock AP test with trivia about the school, and a final boss fight. Set in a fictitious world in the s Taiwan under martial law, Detention, the story-driven atmospheric horror incorporated East Asian elements rarely used in games.

Taoism, Buddhism, Chinese mythology, the game draws on local Taiwanese cultural references to tell an unique and terrifying story. In this 2D atmospheric horror side-scroller, players navigate the main characters in a classic point and click fashion to explore a high school where evil encroaches. While hiding from the rampaging monsters, you are to find items to interact with in the otherworldly rooms. And as more mysteries unveiled, the dark past of a cursed school will finally surface.

Wei falls asleep in class as his instructor, Miss Yin, is mysteriously called from the room and questioned about a book list. He later awakens to find the school abandoned due to an incoming typhoon. After exploring the area he finds another student, Ray, asleep in the auditorium. The storm prevents their departure as they find the bridge to their village has been washed away by a rising river of blood, so they return back to school to wait out the storm.

As Wei departs to find a telephone, the game transitions to Ray as the primary character. Ray awakens in the auditorium once more to a dark and sinister version of the school where Wei is dead and hanged from the ceiling. Ray must wander the school, solve puzzles, avoid malevolent spirits, and find clues to uncover the story behind the school. Ray was a bright and talented student and the only child of couple whose marriage had soured, causing Ray to neglect her studies.

She visits with the school counselor, Mr. She overheard Yin and Chang's conversation, with Yin confronting Chang about how his and Ray's relationship can endanger their book club, and misinterpreted it as Yin trying to take Chang from her. On the night of the storm, Ray convinced Wei to give her the reading list, which she handed to Instructor Bai, a military officer assigned to Greenwood, assuming it would get Yin fired.

However, Yin fled the country before they could capture her. Wei and the other members, despite attempts to get rid of the books, were imprisoned for 15 years, and Chang was executed. Ray was awarded for her actions, but was branded a snitch by her classmates as a result. Distraught by guilt and Chang's death, she jumped off a school building. The game is Ray's soul going through a cycle of her memories as she refuses to accept her guilt.

Towards the end, Ray's shadow asks her a series of questions.
