If you notice what you think is a fault or imperfection with your new windows, doors or glass we explain some of these for you. Many of these are the result of the production methods used or tolerances set by professional organisations and glazing industry bodes. Every one of our powder coated windows and doors comes painted from one of two sources. Systems companies such as Aluk or Smart Systems have their own powder paint plants. Other suppliers use independent powder coating businesses.

Whoever paints the aluminium profiles is certified to strict industry standards such as the global Qualicoat Standard. Organisations such as Qualicoat monitor their suppliers, meaning they adhere to strict production, environmental and quality procedures. Minor inclusions such as tiny pips under the paint are normal and within tolerance. These marks are only visible from up close and not from a reasonable distance to the aluminium profile.

Current standards such as Qualicoat state that if such inclusions are not visible from 3 metres, then this is within industry tolerances and not a defect. Source: Qualicoat Standard 16th Edition.

Again, all glass is checked when it leaves the manufacturer for defects, but there are tolerances every glass supplier works with. By nature of the materials and processes used to make glass and your units, some visual distortions, stains or ripples may be visible.

Often you see these viewed close up, from certain angles, or the way sunlight or artificial light hits your glass. This is not a defect. The toughened glass we supply in every low-level pane and as standard in every type of door goes through a heat process. Apply a small amount of the compound to the scratch and wipe the area with a soft cloth.

Use light pressure to polish the surface crack, removing scuffs, light scratches and ground-in dirt. Wipe away excess compound with a soft cloth. Apply mild detergent, mineral spirits or toothpaste to the crack.

Use a circular motion with light pressure to rub the entire surface of the crack with the desired compound. This process doesn't repair the crack but does remove residue and other deposits, making the crack less visible. Use glass cleaner to remove leftover detergent, mineral spirits and toothpaste from the window.

As curriculum developer and educator, Kristine Tucker has enjoyed the plethora of English assignments she's read and graded! Are they especially noticeable without really "looking for" them? Are they near the edge of the glass or more towards the center of the lite?

Interior or exterior? And are the diagonal? Seems like a bunch of odd questions, but those answers could be all clues as to who and where and when the glass was scratched. Guy and W4U and EZ, you are the installers, what is your thought when a consumer has a scratched glass complaint? There are systems that will totally remove scratches from glass. Unfortunately, virtually all of these systems use cerium oxide or some other abrasive to remove the scratch.

A good operator can do a very nice job of scratch removal, but when using an abrasive system this operator will leave an area of distrotion in the glass in the vicinity of the scratch There is one system on the market that does not use an abrasive and does not distort the glass. It is made by a company called glass-weld and is by far in my experience the best system available - period. If you want to try that route, then I would check with windshield repair folks and ask them about scratch removal.

But, if they suggest any other system other than the glass-weld, I would suggest that you may not be totally happy with the results I have had the opportunity to try a number of the glass scratch-removal systems and thus the very definite opinion. I was going to list both remedies before I left but ran out of time. We are working almost seven days a week and twelve hours a day.

We are lucky today because teh homeowner had to cancel. So we are resting on this beautiful day here. The scratched glass is a common problem. It can happen at anytime from almost anything. I usually walk through with the customer or by myself at the end of each job. I look for any imperfections especially in the glass. If it's scratched before I leave I buy a new piece of glass for them at no cost.

My supplier is great about this.
