The end was just sitting on my desk.. I pulled off the serial cable, tried to load the program again, and got that error message again. That tells me that the serial port needs to see some kind of cross connect or loop back to make it happy.

I have been very busy, and have not had a chance to ohm out the cable and pins to see what wires are cross connected or shorted. Once I figure this out, it should be easy to get it working, I hope.
